I recently downloaded Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express and am impressed with it's performance. It renders CSS layouts quite well; it also gives me the ability to drag and drop server controls. I am downloading the beta version of Microsoft Expression Web 2. I am hoping that I provides the CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) support that I need while allowing me to create and edit *.master pages and vork with server controls like I can in Visual Studio. I am working to implement a redesign of a Web site. The Web site uses CSS layouts versus table layouts. I wonder if there is a tool available that will allow me to manage my *.master pages (templates) while providing great CSS support.

I am learning a lot about managing the Ektron system. I am excited about going back to the office next week and installing the free Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express software. It gives me the ability to perform Web development on the Ektron system. I can insert server controls by dragging and dropping. This is great!

I have been researching and testing different methods for maintaining anchor links within an HTML newsletter sent via Microsoft Outlook. Anchor links allow a Web user to 'jump' to specified 'anchors' within the same document.

The best method for maintaining anchor links is the following:

1) Create the newsletter as a Web page.

2) Copy and paste the newsletter from a browser window to an Microsoft Outlook message window.

3) View the properties of the link (menu bar > Insert > Hyperlink...)

4) Manually remove all of the link address before the '#' symbol (NOTE: this must be done for each anchor link in the newsletter).

5) Click the "OK" button.

I have three ARP cycles going on: one that demonstrates a Community of Practice (Blackboard system support), one that demonstrates scaffolding (Virtual Classroom training), and one that demonstrates social learning (training on Blackboard procedures). By analyzing my data to find what works for me, I will create my own learning theory.

It seems that the first tri has helped me more with understanding the design behind our LMS and the second tri has helped me to become a more effective trainer. The practice that I wish to improve through my ARP is my technology training and my teacher training.

I am thinking about training some of the staff members in the different academic departments to perform Blackboard System Administration. Faculty members could contact them if they needed courses to be created or class rosters to be updated, for example. The question is: how do I set up an online training session? Today was our first EDC 638 meeting for the Spring Semester. I look foward to Graduation. I also look forward to really getting started on my ARP. I have a list of faculty members here at the University that I plan to survey to find out what technology-related skills they would like to learn more about. Communication is very important in the workplace. Working in the Department of Marketing and Communications, I realize the importance of communication on a daily basis. Co-workers should depend on and support each other with feedback, advice, and general help. Tonight I have an assignment to turn in for my EDC 638a class. I am excited about getting online today and responding to some newsgroup postings. At this point in the semester, technical support requests for our learning management system seem to have slowed down. I would like to get my small business started back up (Shields Consulting). I am currently working with a local high school, helping to maintain their web site. Eventually, I would like to learn more about WebQuests and how this high school uses them. I may include this research in my ARP.

I am really enjoying the OMAET program. I still need to purchase my small group book for EDC 638a. I usually post/answer newsgroup messages during my lunch hour (Noon to 1:00 p.m.). I usually attend classes at home via TappedIN. I also try to get my reading done at home (vs. at work). I want to get much more active in newsgroups. I would love to be able to squeeze in some time for exercise. I really appreciate my clasmates and their newsgroup postings.

This week I have been working on applying templates to the pages on the CBU Web Site. I am currently using the trial version of Dreamweaver MX. I like using the templates because when I need to make a major change to the web site, I can just change the template and automatically update all of the pages that use that template! I hope that the new web page design will be easier to navigate. A user survey will help measure the effectiveness of this new design.
Today in TappedIN we talked about who our critical friends are. I realized that I have more critical friends than I originally thought! A critical friend is someone who gives you constructive criticism.

Today we had our official groundbreaking ceremony at CBU. It was really fabulous. This week we installed a WebCam for our university building project. The WebCam will be a exciting addition to the CBU Web Site - I hope that web site visitors are as excited about the WebCam as I am!

I have identified my critical friends - the University I.T. Department and the Office of Academic Affairs. Both of these units play a crucial part in the operation of the LMS. I would like to serve as a liaison between the academic and technology units of the University. I am also planning to release a survey for our web users in the very near future. This will allow me to collect data for my ARP, and help me pinpoint areas that need improvement as far as web service.

This week, I focused on adding to and updating the web site. I have a feeling that the web site users are going to very important in my ARP. I now consider our learning management system to be a part of the web site, not a separate entity.

Today, most of my focus was on updating the Web Site.
I talked with some faculty and staff members about LMS issues. The more that I talk to the faculty/staff members, the more that I feel the need to conduct a survey on LMS performance and support. I am excited about gathering this information. I am preparing a list of survey questions that I will ask select faculty and staff members to review before I create the survey. The purpose of the survey will be to evaluate the performance, usage, and support of our LMS.

Today I continued work on the Web site and added a "Campus Information" section to the CBU Web Site. I spoke with a faculty member about Blackboard Technical Issues. I would like to survey all of the CBU faculty members that use the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS). This will make me more aware of technical support issues. I also plan to survey Blackboard student users at the end of this term.

Today I updated the Web Site, attended Chapel, purchased a web software license (QuickMenu Pro, OpenCube, Inc.), reorganized some of the images on the CBU Web Site, met with the Director of Assessment and Retention about Assessment information on the CBU Web Site, compared prices for digital camera equipment, and confirmed the status of our WebCam project.

I feel that my practice is improving the student, faculty, staff, and alumni experience at California Baptist University through the use of web and instructional technology.
